REVEREND CHERYL ALSTON is a native New Yorker. She attended Erasmus Hall High
School and after graduation, she attended the New York City Technical College and
Brooklyn College. She studied Human Services with an interest in Gerontology. She also
attended seminary school in New York City.
Cheryl worked for the Department of Social Services where she was a center-based trainer.
She trained a staff of 188 on Old and New Procedures. She also was a check fraud auditor
for many years in Social Services. She later became an administrator supervising 12
supervisors who supervised six workers each who were all under her supervision. She made
final decisions on their cases and the handling of those cases.
Reverend Alston was also a part of African American Women for Societal Change at the Gay and Lesbian center
in New York City. She became a member of Unity Fellowship Church, Brooklyn under Rev. Z. Jones in 1995 and
after completing classes she became an Ordained Deacon in 1996 and went on to become an Ordained Minister
in 1999.
Prior to attending Unity Fellowship Church, she was a member of Calvary Church in Brooklyn under Elder
Clenso Allen. She served as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Mass Choir, and Missionary
Board and taught vacation bible school.
After working 30 years for the Department of Social Services Cheryl retired and with her wife, Emily moved to
Baltimore to be close to their daughters and granddaughter. She is now a member of the Unity Fellowship
Church of Baltimore under Bishop Harris Thomas where she oversees the women’s ministry, the fundraising
committee and dance ministry. Rev. Alston is in the masters’ program getting a double masters, one in Divinity
and the other a master in Christian Counseling. She will have her first master’s in divinity in December 2012.
